In a landmark announcement, GHG Protocol has launched its groundbreaking Land Sector and Removals (LSR) Standard, establishing the first global framework for corporate accounting of agricultural emissions and CO₂ removals. Taking effect January 2027, this standard fills a critical gap for the agriculture sector, which accounts for approximately 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
According to the GHG Protocol release, the new LSR Standard enables companies to account for greenhouse gas emissions and CO₂ removals from agricultural land use and emerging CO₂ removal technologies, such as direct air capture and fossil carbon capture with geologic storage. Notably, the LSR Standard is the first GHG Protocol standard to include traceability requirements for Scope 3 emissions, enabling land sector companies to engage suppliers in reducing emissions and scaling up removals while providing flexibility based on available product sourcing information.
Ecoryx Experts’ Perspective
The launch of the GHG Protocol’s Land Sector and Removals (LSR) Standard marks a major advancement in corporate climate accountability. By introducing a globally consistent, science-based framework for measuring emissions from agricultural land use and high-integrity CO₂ removals, the Standard addresses a long-standing gap in climate reporting and strengthens the credibility of corporate net-zero claims.
This development is particularly relevant for the MENA region, where food security, water scarcity, and land productivity are strategic priorities. As governments and businesses invest in sustainable agriculture, agritech, and innovative farming models, the LSR Standard provides the missing measurement framework needed to transparently demonstrate climate impact and progress.
In Saudi Arabia, the Standard aligns closely with Vision 2030, supporting national efforts to transform the agricultural sector, scale carbon management solutions, and advance emerging CO₂ removal technologies. As companies prepare for implementation in 2027, early adoption will be essential to enhance transparency, attract sustainable finance, and position the Kingdom as a regional leader in credible climate reporting.
